Origin and History

Caring for the Scarlet Macaw

Scarlet macaws are among the largest parrots, so they need a large living space.
These birds require a lot of time outside of their cage and can develop behavioral problems if not given enough activity. Providing them with toys and swings is important to prevent boredom and self-harm. Weekly baths using lukewarm water and a mist setting are also beneficial.

Diet and Nutrition

In the wild, scarlet macaws eat nuts, leaves, berries, and seeds.
Their strong beaks help them break open hard foods. In captivity, they should be fed a balanced diet of a formulated parrot mix with seeds, dried fruits, and nuts. They should not be fed only seeds, as this can lead to health problems. A healthy macaw eats about 10 to 15% of its body weight each day. Since they weigh about 2 pounds, they need roughly half a cup of food daily, which totals to about 100 pounds a year. It is best to feed them in the morning and remove any uneaten food after an hour.

Exercise

As highly active birds, scarlet macaws need plenty of space and exercise.
