Caring for Green-Wing Macaws

In the wild, green-wing macaws typically live in groups of six to eight birds and are very social animals. These birds are highly trainable and require sufficient attention and bonding time because of their social nature.

Place a strong perch in the cage and be ready to replace it as it wears down.
Position food, water, and treat dishes above the perch on the side of the cage. Include branches inside the enclosure to allow the bird to climb. Offer a wide range of toys for chewing and playing. A playpen at the top of the cage can be a helpful addition.

The green-wing macaw can also thrive in an outdoor aviary during warm weather.

The amount of food a macaw needs depends on its size.
On average, they eat between half to three-quarters of a cup of parrot mix and the same amount of fruits and vegetables each day. It is best to feed them once in the morning when they wake up and again in the evening before they sleep.

Like all parrots, green-wing macaws should not be fed avocado, chocolate, rhubarb, or coffee beans, as these are poisonous to them.

Exercise

Although green-wing macaws are not as active as some other large parrots, they still require regular exercise to keep both their minds and bodies healthy. It is important to closely supervise your bird when it is out of the cage.
