Macaw Parrot for Sale Macaws are large, vibrant parrots native to South America.
Europeans first became aware of these “New World” parrots through the records of Christopher Columbus’ voyages in the 15th century.
Temperament
Macaws are lively and active, with big, energetic personalities that match their size.
A well-cared-for macaw that gets proper nutrition, mental stimulation, attention, and enough space to exercise makes for a unique, long-lived companion that is affectionate and loyal. However, their size and personality can make them difficult pets.
It is best to start training these intelligent birds from a young age. Early training should include hand-feeding, discouraging nipping or biting, preventing screaming, and eventually teaching your bird to talk or sing. As you develop a bond with your macaw, you may even share jokes and enjoy various forms of interactive play.
Speech and Vocalizations
Macaws are loud and can be quite noisy. If you find loud noises intolerable or live near neighbors, a macaw may not be the best pet for you.
They can learn to speak and mimic human speech, though they may not be as clear as some other bird species. With consistent training, the blue-and-gold macaw is the best talking large macaw, while the Hahn’s macaw is the best talking mini macaw.
Macaw Colors and Markings
There are several species of macaws in the wild, but the ones most commonly kept as pets are large, colorful macaws. Popular pet species include scarlet, military, blue-and-gold, and hyacinth macaws. Mini macaws are less common and include species such as Hahn’s, Illiger’s, and yellow-collared macaws. Macaws come in a wide array of colors, with plumage that often resembles every color of the rainbow.
Macaws are dimorphic, meaning their sexes are not easily distinguishable by appearance.
To determine the sex, a bird must undergo genetic testing or a surgical sexing procedure.
Caring for a Macaw
Mini macaws can live in a cage designed for Amazon parrots (2 feet by 3 feet and 4 feet tall)
You will also need to provide your bird with a play gym, out-of-cage perches, or a play stand. Offer a variety of wooden toys or untreated wood chunks for your macaw to chew on, rotating them regularly.
Macaws can be messy and destructive, so provide durable toys to keep them occupied and prevent damage to your furniture or other household items. You can even create your own macaw toys using safe, recyclable materials like phone books or tissue boxes.
Common Health Problems
Macaws are generally hardy and have long lifespans. However, their main health concern is emotional rather than physical. As intelligent and social birds, they are prone to boredom and loneliness. A depressed macaw may pull out its own feathers. Two simple solutions are to get another macaw or to spend a great deal of time interacting with your bird. Either way, you will have a lively and interactive home environment.
Macaws are also at risk for several avian diseases:
-Proventricular Dilatation Disease. An incurable viral disease
-Beak Malocclusion. A beak alignment disorder
-Aspergillosis. A fungal infection
Diet and Nutrition
As pets, a formulated pelleted food should be the foundation of their diet, supplemented with a wide range of healthy fresh fruits and vegetables.
Pellets should make up 50 percent of their food, while seeds and nuts should be no more than 10 percent of their diet (as they are high in fat). The rest of their meals should consist of fresh fruit and vegetables.
A healthy macaw typically eats about 10 to 15 percent of its body weight each day. For example, a large scarlet macaw that weighs around 2 pounds will eat approximately 1/2 to 3/4 cup of parrot mix and about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of fresh fruit and vegetables daily.
You can also offer your macaws small portions of whatever you are eating, as long as it does not include chocolate, avocado, caffeine, salt, or sugar. These birds often enjoy cooked pasta, applesauce, and cereal as treats.
Exercise
Macaws need significantly more space than a cage can provide to explore, stretch their wings, and maintain good mental and physical health. Unless you have a free-flight aviary, plan on allowing your macaw to move around freely.
