Palm Black Cockatoo for Sale

Black Palm Cockatoo for sale Undoubtedly, the Palm cockatoo is one of the most unique and sought-after parrots you can come across. These excellent rare cockatoos will leave everyone speechless with their stunning appearance, which is as intimidating as beauty. But underneath the cuties’ display lies a loving and affectionate pet with many excellent traits which they share with other, more common cockatoos. If you manage to have one of these birds as your pet, there will be many things you need to know, so read on! The unique Palm-cockatoo never stops to amaze with its magnificent look and is a rare sight.

Native Region/Natural Habitat

There are a lot of unusual and exciting birds native to Oceania. The Palm cockatoo is one of these. Its native habitat of Australia’s Cape York, New Guinea, and the Aru Islands. There, it inhabits the lush rainforests & woodlands abundant in the region. These parrots are rarely seen in large flocks, preferring to gather in pairs. One-unique fact is related to their breeding. They lay one egg every other year. Their reproductive rate is the lowest among parrots in existence! This is 1 of the contributing facts to their overall rarity.

Overall -Description

Palm cockatoos cannot be compared to any other parrot when it comes to their appearance. They are utterly unique, and many weird details make them so. The average adult’s length is around 24 inches (60 cm), and they retain the short, round tail of the cockatoo family.  They also have a distinctive, pointy crest raised and lowered according to the bird’s mood. But one of the most exciting parts is their beak. They have the second largest beaks of any parrot – a vast and powerful upper mandible that doesn’t connect to the lower part. In addition, they are separated by a large mouth and a protruding, muscular tongue. A good design for breaking nuts and reaching into tricky places!

Speech and Sounds

Like other cockatoos birds, they, too, can be a bit loud and noisy if they do not get a lot of attention. They also have a much more vocal complex ability and can learn and repeat several familiar words. But mainly, they express themselves with loud and clear vocal tones, calmer if they are happy or louder if they are angry. Cockatoos are best kept indoors due to their huge size and possible noise levels.

Colors

These birds are completely black. The same goes for the beak, feathers, and eyes. The only other color is a red patch of bare skin on their cheeks, similar to a macaw. While this coloration-sounds simple, and it is, these cockatoos still look spectacular, if not a little intimidating, with their big and sharp beak and the iconic combination of red & black. In any case, they will never fail to captivate you and everyone who meets them. A simple-combination of black plumage with red cheeks makes the iconic appearance of the Palm cockatoo.

Care and Feeding

Those big beaks are there with a purpose. These cockatoos feed on large nuts, palm fruits, and seeds in the wild.  Their diet as pets might be trickier. It’s best to offer a special pellet-based diet and a variety of vegetables, nuts, & fruits such as peanuts, walnuts, apples, cabbage, and kale. Better-equipped pet stores should have all you need regarding the best seed mixes for Palm cockatoos.

Health and Common Conditions

These birds are very hardy and enduring and have an average lifespan of 60 years. However, some sources claim they can live up to 90 years! Luckily, they will be free of sickness with plenty of care and interaction. First, however, consider some more common symptoms of trouble – apathy, loss of feathers, or difficulty, rasping breathing. With a long lifespan, your pet Palm-cockatoo can become a lifelong feather friend and a part of your family home.

Personality & Behavior

Palm cockatoos are very smart and have great attitudes. However, it might take some time to get to know each other and get into a routine that works best for them. Although they are considered affectionate and loving, they can become spoiled and throw tantrums if something is not as they want. That’s why you’ll need to show a good attitude as well. But in the end, these vast parrots can become loving and playful friends that will keep you entertained.
