Umbrella Cockatoo for Sale

Baby Umbrella Cockatoo for Sale

Umbrella Cockatoo for Sale, this bird are originally from the tropical regions of Indonesia. Over time, their range has expanded to include various parts of Indonesia. These birds live in different types of habitats, including forests, mangroves, swamps, and open woodlands. They often inhabit areas near rivers and the edges of fields or clearings, where they can find ample food. Due to habitat loss, hunting, and trapping, the population of umbrella cockatoos is decreasing. Consequently, they are now classified as a protected species.

Temperament

Umbrella cockatoos are naturally gentle, calm, and affectionate, which makes them great companions. They often stay close to their mates and rarely leave their side. If separated, both birds can become very depressed. These birds are not typically aggressive and quickly develop strong bonds with their human caregivers.

They thrive in environments where they receive a lot of love and attention. These birds are eager to please and need at least one to two hours of training, interaction, and mental stimulation each day. Umbrella cockatoos are highly social and intelligent. Short, consistent training sessions are most effective. To avoid boredom, it’s important to provide them with a variety of safe toys.

Speech and Vocalizations

They can learn around 50 words but tend to scream rather than speak. Their vocalizations are loud and can sound harsh or grating. They may also hiss when they feel threatened. In the wild, these calls help them communicate over long distances because of this, they may not be suitable for people living in apartments, condos, or near neighbors. While it’s difficult to stop them from being loud, not responding to their calls can help reduce the frequency of screaming.

Umbrella Cockatoo Colors and Markings

Umbrella cockatoos are mostly white with a prominent white crest. This distinctive feature helps identify them from other Moluccan Cockatoo. A raised crest may also indicate that the bird is about to bite if approached. The underside of their wings and tail feathers has a pale yellow color, which is especially noticeable when they are in flight.

Males and females are similar in color, but males are usually larger and have broader heads and bigger beaks. They have black beaks and gray or black feet, and some have a slight blue tint around the eyes. Males typically have dark brown eyes that appear almost black, while adult females usually have reddish-brown eyes.

Caring for the Umbrella Cockatoo

These large birds need a spacious cage and plenty of room to move around. Umbrella cockatoos are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day and sleep for 10 to 12 hours at night. Quality sleep is essential for their health and happiness.

These birds have a powdery down that releases dust into the environment, so they may not be ideal for people with allergies or respiratory conditions. Regular bathing can help reduce the amount of dust they produce.

Common Health Problems

Umbrella cockatoos can suffer from several health issues that affect other pet birds, including: Feather plucking: They may pull out their feathers if they are feeling stressed, depressed, or lack mental stimulation. Psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD): This is a serious virus, often called “bird AIDS,” which can cause growths, abnormal feather development, skin lesions, and feather loss. Fatty liver disease and obesity: A diet high in fat can lead to these conditions, resulting in health complications.

Diet and Nutrition

Like all large parrots, umbrella cockatoos have a large appetite. In the wild, they spend most of their day searching for food, often feeding on seeds, nuts, coconuts, and grains found in farmlands.

As pets, about 80% of their diet should consist of a formulated pelleted diet. The remaining 20% should include a variety of vegetables, such as leafy greens and root vegetables. High-quality grains like quinoa and other ancient grains, fresh sprouts, and fruits are excellent additions to their diet. Fresh water should always be available.
