Caring for the White-Capped Pionus

These birds also have a musky or sweet smell that some people find unpleasant, while others enjoy the scent. Regular bathing is important, and it is fine to take them into the shower with you.

Common Health Problems

Pionus parrots are prone to fungal infections, kidney-related issues like visceral gout, and aspergillosis, which causes heavy and labored breathing. They are also susceptible to vitamin A deficiency.

Diet and Nutrition

In captivity, they should be fed a high-quality seed and pellet mix along with a variety of fresh, bird-safe fruits and vegetables. Corn, especially corn on the cob, is a favorite, so including it regularly is a good idea.

Introducing your bird to new foods not only provides better nutrition but also adds mental stimulation. You can offer an unlimited amount of pellet food, as they will eat only what they need.

Exercise

If outdoor time is not possible, a large cage or aviary is necessary to allow for sufficient movement.

Exercise should take place in a safe, secure area with windows closed, ceiling fans turned off, and any indoor pets removed. Supervision is important to prevent access to harmful items.
