Caique for Sale

White Bellied Caique for Sale

Caique for Sale, in the wild, caiques are native to regions of South America north of the Amazon. Their natural habitat includes countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, and Suriname.

These birds typically live in swamps and tropical lowland forests.  The name “caique” comes from the Tupi language of Brazil, meaning “aquatic bird.” They enjoy bathing and spending time in water.

Temperament

They love attention, affection, and time spent with their human companions. They are also quick learners and can pick up tricks easily, making them very entertaining.

Caiques are lively, mischievous, and curious birds. They are always active and enjoy exploring their environment. While they are energetic, they can become irritable at times and may nibble or use their beaks during interactions with people.

As pets, caiques usually do well on their own or with a partner.

Speech and Vocalizations

Some caiques can learn to speak a few words, but most prefer to vocalize in their natural bird language, which includes whistles, songs, and mimicry of environmental sounds. While they can be loud, they generally produce a moderate level of noise compared to other parrots, often with soothing tones. Occasionally, they may make high-pitched, shrill calls. Before deciding on a caique or sun conure, make sure their vocalizations and noise level suit your preferences.

Caiques and Their Colorful Appearance

Caiques have a distinct, color-blocked appearance with clear contrasts between body parts.
Their heads, wings, bellies, and thighs are usually different colors, with little to no blending. The black-headed and white-bellied caiques are the most common color types.

Black-headed caiques have mostly black heads with orange or yellow cheeks and green streaks under their eyes. Subspecies like the yellow-thighed and yellow-tailed caiques are becoming increasingly popular.

Caring for Caiques

Caiques require regular playtime and lots of positive interaction. They can entertain themselves for short periods, making them suitable for owners with busy schedules.

They are small in size, which makes them ideal for apartment or condominium living. Despite their size, they thrive best in a small aviary or a large cage. The minimum recommended size for a cage is 2 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 3 feet tall. The space between the bars should not exceed 3/4 of an inch. Since they are intelligent, they can be escape artists. Ensure your cage is strong and secure, preferably made of wrought iron, as they may attempt to chew through other materials. Provide a daily bath with fresh water, as caiques love splashing and bathing.

Common Health Issues

Caiques are generally healthy birds. However, they are susceptible to polyomavirus, which can be fatal in young birds. This virus causes severe intestinal problems and may affect the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Diet and Nutrition

In the wild, caiques eat seeds, berries, and fruits. Fresh, clean water should always be available. Leafy green vegetables such as Swiss chard, watercress, kale, and collard greens are excellent additions to their diet. Fresh fruit is also a great topping for vegetables.

A good starting point is to offer 1/2 cup of parrot pellet and 1/2 cup of fruit and vegetable salad in the morning. Adjust the amount based on how much the bird eats. If the bird finishes everything, you can offer a second feeding a couple of hours before bedtime. Monitor your caique’s weight and adjust portions accordingly if there are noticeable weight changes.

Exercise

Caiques are active birds and often prefer walking over flying. They enjoy time on the floor, hopping around and moving on large flat surfaces. Their unique hopping motion is charming and adds to their playful nature. Provide at least one hour of supervised, daily floor time outside the cage.
This helps them exercise their strong leg muscles and explore safely. To ensure their safety, turn off ceiling fans, close all windows and doors, and cover any open fireplaces before allowing them to explore.
