Baby Rainbow Lorikeet for Sale

Rainbow Lorikeet for Sale These birds typically live in trees within rainforests, bushlands, and woodlands. They can fly up to 40 miles in a single day to search for food and often travel in noisy flocks, sometimes numbering one or two dozen birds.

Temperament

They are generally easy to interact with and enjoy socializing with their human caregivers. However, their intelligence also makes them capable escape artists, so cages with secure locks are essential. Although rainbow lorikeets usually get along well with other bird species, they can be territorial and may become jealous.

Speech and Vocalizations

Rainbow lorikeets are talented talkers and can learn to say many words and phrases.
They are vocal birds with a high-pitched, often shrill voice that includes frequent squawks. Their loud and high-pitched calls may not be suitable for people living near neighbors who are sensitive to noise.

Rainbow Lorikeet Colors and Markings

Rainbow lorikeets are among the most colorful companion birds. They have a slender body shape similar to Asiatic parakeets, such as the Indian ringneck or Alexandrine parakeet. Their red beaks contrast with their blue facial feathers, and they have dark, grayish-black feet. Males and females look the same, so determining the sex requires genetic testing or a surgical procedure.

Caring for a Rainbow Lorikeet

Rainbow lorikeets make great pets for those who have the time to spend with them.
These birds are playful and require plenty of toys to keep their minds and beaks occupied. They need a large flight cage or aviary. The minimum size should be at least 4 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 3 feet tall.

Caring for lorikeets can be messy due to their liquid-based diets.
Their cage should be placed in an area without carpeting, and floors and walls should be easy to clean. Many people line their walls with plastic sheeting to protect them from bird droppings. These intelligent birds can be trained to use a specific area for toileting.

Since their diet consists mostly of sugary nectar, which can lead to bacterial growth, food cups should be cleaned within two hours of feeding to prevent infections.

Common Health Problems

Rainbow lorikeets are at risk for lorikeet paralysis syndrome, a condition that affects their ability to move and swallow. The exact cause is unknown, but it may be due to a virus or vitamin deficiency.  Although not common, rainbow lorikeets may become depressed without enough mental and physical stimulation.

Another health concern is sour crop, a bacterial infection in the crop or food storage pouch in the bird’s throat.

Diet and Nutrition

In the wild, lorikeets primarily feed on nectar and flower pollen.
Their tongues have specialized brush-like structures at the tips, which help them collect these foods from plants. Start with 1/4 cup per feeding and increase if they show interest.

Avoid citrus fruits as they can upset digestion. Avoid feeding them seeds, pellets, avocado, chocolate, coffee, rhubarb, or alcohol, as these are toxic to birds.

Exercise

Rainbow lorikeets are very active and require a lot of exercise for their health.
They should have at least 3 to 4 hours of supervised out-of-cage playtime each day to maintain their physical and emotional well-being. These birds enjoy playing and need a variety of toys to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. They are also avid chewers, so it is important to provide safe, durable toys made from appropriate materials for their beaks.
