Bird Canary for Sale
Canary for Sale Wild canaries are small finches that naturally live in the Macaronesian islands, such as the Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands. These birds have been bred in captivity since the 17th century. They were brought to Europe by Spanish sailors following the colonization of these islands. Today, the canaries sold in pet stores are genetically different from their wild relatives. Canaries can breed with other finch species, which leads to interesting hybrids.
Temperament
Canaries like human company but are not as affectionate as budgies or parrots.
They are quite smart and many owners teach them to perch on their hands or fly around the room. Young canaries are easier to train, but with patience and consistency, most canaries can be tamed and trained.
These birds are generally solitary and don’t get lonely when kept alone.
They can live with other small birds in an aviary. However, it’s not wise to keep two male canaries together, as they tend to fight.
Speech and Vocalizations
The male song canary is especially famous for its singing.
Popular types include the Waterslager, German Roller, Russian Singer, Spanish Timbrado, and American Singer. While females mainly make chirping sounds, males create complex songs. Usually, canaries do not sing during the molting period.
Canary Colors and Markings
In the wild, canaries have a greenish-yellow body with yellow underparts.
Through selective breeding, domestic canaries now come in a wide range of bright colors, such as orange, white, red, and yellow. Among these, yellow is the most common.
Caring for the Canary
Since they enjoy flying, a longer cage is better. Do not clip their wings, as flying is important for their exercise.
Include perches of different sizes, from 3/8 to 3/4 inch in diameter, in the cage.
Carving notches into the perches can give them a better grip. Offering a variety of perch sizes helps keep the bird’s feet strong. Avoid using sandpaper-covered perches, as they can harm the canary’s feet.
Canaries are tough and can survive in room temperature, but their cage should be away from drafts, air conditioners, and direct sunlight, as they can overheat.
If a canary has its mouth open and wings spread away from the body, it might be too hot. If it appears puffed up, it could be too cold.
Provide a shallow water dish or a bath at least three or four times a week for the canary to clean itself.
It’s best to cover the cage at night so the canary gets enough rest.
They prefer a natural light and dark cycle, and bright lights at night can stress them out.
Common Health Problems
Many health issues in canaries are due to poor diet, unclean cages, or exposure to drafts.
If a canary shows signs like weight loss, bald patches, scaly legs, diarrhea, constipation, or being inactive, it’s important to take them to an avian vet.
Canaries are at risk of various infections from viruses, fungi, and bacteria.
They may develop treatable bacterial infections like avian gastric yeast, candidiasis, and chlamydia. Other conditions such as bumblefoot cause swelling and sores, while mycoplasma leads to eye or nose discharge. Although treatable, tuberculosis is a serious, untreatable respiratory disease.
Lethal viruses such as avian pox and polyomavirus can be fatal.
Aspergillus, a fungal infection, is usually deadly but may respond to antifungal treatment in some cases.
Diet and Nutrition
In the wild, Canaries mainly eat seeds and sometimes eat insects.Domestic canaries should be fed high-quality seed mixtures designed for them, with vitamin coatings. Remove the seed hulls each day to make the food easier to eat. Pellet food can be offered as a supplement, though seeds are usually more appealing. Keep both seed and pellet dishes in the cage.
Add fresh vegetable greens like kale, broccoli, dandelions, spinach, celery, peas, and watercress to the diet daily. Include small pieces of hard-boiled eggs as a protein source. Always ensure your canary has access to fresh water.
