English Budgerigar for Sale

Budgerigar for Sale The English naturalist John Gould introduced the budgie to Europe around 1840, where they quickly became popular as pets. By 1894, Australia banned the export of budgies, which led to a thriving breeding industry in Europe. The bird arrived in America around 1920, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that it gained widespread popularity.

Behavior and Temperament

Budgies are gentle and easygoing birds. They are also very easy to tame, especially if they are acquired when they are young. Budgies often enjoy each other’s company when kept in pairs, but they may not bond as strongly with their human owners or mimic speech as well. They are playful, active, and generally quieter than other types of parrots. Other similar, small, long-tailed birds include Lineolated Parakeets

Speech and Vocalizations

Budgies can be challenging to understand, but they are skilled at mimicking human speech.
They are not the easiest birds to train for speech, but they can learn a few simple words. In addition to mimicking speech, they can also imitate other sounds, such as the creak of a door, the squeak of a chair, or the tone of a text message. With frequent exposure, your budgie may start repeating these sounds.

Colors and Markings

The natural color of a wild budgie is light green with black bars on its wings, back, and head.
Adult females typically have a tan or beige cere, while males have a bluish cere. Young budgies have bar markings on their foreheads that fade as they age. Their eyes are usually dark, but they may gradually turn gray.

Housing

Budgies are active and playful, so they require a spacious cage that allows room for toys, sleep, food, and flight. The minimum cage size is 20 inches long by 12 inches deep by 18 inches high, but a larger cage is better. Horizontal bars are ideal for climbing and exercise. Place several perches at different levels, giving your budgie enough space to move between them. Offering a variety of perch sizes, shapes, and textures helps maintain healthy foot condition. The cage should also include a nesting box, food and water dishes, toys, and items to chew on.

Even with a large cage, budgies need time outside to play and socialize.  If you’re concerned about controlling their flight area, you may consider trimming their wings to limit their ability to fly.

Like most parrots, budgies are social birds and many owners keep them in pairs for companionship. Budgies tend to be happiest when kept together.

Common Health Issues

Budgies are susceptible to some of the same health problems as other parrots, but they also have some unique issues. They can develop goiters due to a lack of iodine or develop tumors if their diet is too high in seeds and not enough in fruits and vegetables.

Diet and Nutrition

A varied diet is essential for a healthy budgie, as they are natural foragers in the wild.
Seeds can be a nutritious part of their diet, but they are high in fat, so they should only make up a part of the overall meal. Examples include carrots, broccoli, corn, spinach, beans, and more.

When introducing new foods, be patient, as budgies can be hesitant. A cuttlebone can be provided as a calcium source.

Exercise

Free flight is essential for budgies. Try to give them several hours each day in a secure, safe room. A large houseplant can serve as a good play area. Budgies also need a variety of toys to keep them active and mentally stimulated. Rotating toys every month or so can help prevent boredom.
